DC Emancipation Day 2025

This year is the 162nd Anniversary of the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862, the only act that stands as an example of compensation by the federal government to freed slaves.  On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia. Passage of this act came nine months before President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. The law ended slavery in Washington, DC which freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned these individuals, and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16th as DC Emancipation Day.

And on January 4, 2005, DC Mayor Anthony Williams signed legislation making Emancipation Day an official public holiday to be commemorated annually on April 16. This year marks the 19th Anniversary of the official DC Emancipation Day holiday.

This year's Emancipation Day celebration is on Sunday, April 14th. The festivities begin at 2pm with a Parade, followed by the DC Emancipation Day Concert at 3pm, and concludes with Fireworks at 8:30pm.

HOST

TOMMY MCFLY

Tommy McFLY has made a name for himself as a DC media ambassador. Since he arrived in the nation’s capital in 2006, he - in no particular order – was the youngest person to host a morning radio show in Washington; during the Obama Administration became the first person in history to emcee the White House Easter Egg Roll; and created the Best Buddies Prom, which raised more than $1 million in five years. Whether he’s co-hosting “The Tommy + Kelly Show” on Real.Fun.DC. or sharing the stories of the people and communities that make Washington tick on NBC4, his love for his adopted city shines through. His commitment to social responsibility began at age five, when he helped his great grandmother pinch perogies for the local firehouse bazaar, and he continues to use his microphone to encourage others to get involved, give back, and pay it forward. His awards include a 2019 Capital Emmy for his coverage of the Nationals’ World Series, a 2018 EPIC Award for Social Media Content.
